The performance opera GAZ staged by the music and theater group NOVA OPERA is a modern reinterpretation of the legacy of Les Kurbas, a Ukrainian avant-garde director who was persecuted by the Soviet regime. The play “Gas” by the German playwright Georg Kaiser was the first piece performed by the “Beresil” theater in 1923 and became a classic example of Ukrainian performative expressionism. The musical score of the composer Anatolii Butskyi was not preserved, but there are many descriptions of its sound which had impressed the audience of post-revolutionary Kiev at that time. In the stage production of NOVA OPERA, modern composers have restored and redefined lost music. A fragment of the performance was presented for the first time in November 2018 as part of the exhibition “Kurbas: New Worlds” at the Kiev exhibition area Art Arsenal.
