Exchange is a win-win for our countries

As a longtime researcher and friend of Ukraine, I am happy to see that the opportunities offered by the Bilateral cultural year Ukraine-Austria are being so successfully used by both countries.

Ukraine itself can inspire as much as its its citizens, whereas my native land, Austria, has also lots to offer. So, this exchange is a win-win. It is utterly important that Ukraine does not remain a blank space in the Austrian’s perception of Europe. And it is highly desirable that we know a lot more about each other in the future and work together even more closely on that basis so far achieved.

As an expert in Ukrainian language history and textual philology, I have been cooperating with the Ukrainian partners for decades. And that enriches me not only as a scientist but also as human. I am very grateful for that.

I wish all of us that the Austrian-Ukrainian Year of Culture creates new connections between Ukraine and Austria. These two countries have much more in common than it may seem. In turn, we can learn so much from our differences.
