Ukraine must be finally anchored on the mental map of the Austrians

Emeritus Professor of Eastern European History at the University of Vienna and Foreign Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

For almost 40 years now I have been trying to spread knowledge about Ukraine through my books, articles in the press and lectures abroad, as well as to awake understanding for its people.

Despite some progress, much remains to be done. Initiatives such as the Year of Culture Ukraine-Austria 2019 can make here an important contribution.

In May, I had an opportunity to present the Ukrainian translation of my new book in Kyiv, and I was impressed by the massive interest of the media and visitors to the Arsenal Book Fair. Unfortunately, our interest in Ukraine is still lower. The task to eliminate this asymmetry persists, we still have to ensure that the Ukraine is finally anchored on the mental map of the Austrians.
